Spa Cover Measuring Tips

Your new Spa Cover Spot hot tub cover will be made to dimensions you provide. Since you’re responsible for accurate measurements, use a tape measure & double-check your figures. It’s easy, and we show you how.

1. Length and width measurements are in inches, rounded up to the nearest inch because allowing a little extra is a good practice. A spa cover that is a little larger than the acrylic shell will work just fine, but a cover that is too small will be tight or may not fit at all.
2. Dimensions are best taken from the spa or hot tub first (not the old hot tub cover). If your old spa cover fit correctly, compare your measurements to those of your old cover for verification.
3. Hot Tub Covers over 96″ length or width are oversize at additional cost.
4. Sorry, we cannot make covers for spas with obstructions or features needing special cutouts, flaps, or hoods unless we have a Very detailed template.

Conventional Hot Tub Cabinets – Hot Tub Covers with Rounded Corners (most spas/hot tubs)
Most newer hot tubs are made with rounded corners with the acrylic shell lip slightly overhanging the spa cabinet paneling. These hot tubs are very easy to measure from the outside edge of the shell.

1. Measure the required overall shell dimensions.
2. The spa cover skirt covers the lip of the shell as shown (right). Our standard 2.5 inch hot tub cover skirt length is normally ideal for these spas, but you can specify any length you require.
3. The vast majority of hot tub covers are made with rounded corners (Radius Corners).

Spa Cabinets with Wooden Edge Rim
If your spa has rounded corners but sits in a square wooden cabinet you have a choice as to how your cover can be made:

Skirt conceals only acrylic shell lip & skirt sits atop square wood edge

1. If you prefer to have your spa cover sit atop the wood edge, then measure acrylic shell dimensions and skirt length.
2. Make skirt length about 1/2″ shorter than distance from top of spa shell to top of wood edge rim, so that it does not bunch up against the wooden edge of the spa cabinet. This will allow the cover to seat positively against the shell.
3. This is the default cover construction for spa cabinets with wood edge rim and you would need to give a rounded corner radius.

Skirt conceals shell lip & overhangs square wood cabinet edge rim.

1. If you prefer to have your spa cover’s skirt overhang the wood edge, then measure overall cabinet dimensions above to make a slightly larger cover than example.
2. Determine skirt length long enough to cover the wood edge. Measure from top of spa shell to bottom of wood edge rim.

Inset Acrylic Hot Tubs / Spas
If your spa’s acrylic shell is set directly into a wooden deck or built into a concrete surface.

1. Be sure to take overall outside measurements of shell length and width (NOT the inside opening dimensions) so that your hot tub cover will seat correctly and covers the spa shell’s acrylic rim.
2. Make skirt length about 1/2″ shorter than distance from top of spa shell to top of deck, so that it does not bunch up against the deck surface. This will allow the spa cover to seat positively against the shell when closed.

In-Ground Concrete or Plaster Hot Tubs

1. Be sure to add at least 6 to 8″ to the opening dimensions (length and width) so that your hot tub cover will be supported properly and extend past the spa opening at least 3 to 4″ on all sides per (X) above. Example: spa opening is 70″ x 80″; order cover 78″ x 88″.
2. This type of spa cover is sometimes made with no skirt.

How To Make A Spa Cover Template
For an odd-shaped spa, you can easily make a template which we can use to make your hot tub cover. From any home improvement store, obtain the following supplies to make the tracing.

1. Clear Plastic Painter’s Tarp
2. Roll of Masking Tape
3. Permanent Marking Pen.

Instructions:

1. Drape the clear plastic over the top of the spa.
2. Tape the plastic to the sides of the hot tub cabinet of platform surface. (If in-ground or in-deck spa)
3. When plastic is taut, first write the word “Top” on it, the trace an outline of the spa shell using a felt tipped permanent marker, leaving a little extra (1/2″ or so) all around the perimeter.
4. IMPORTANT: Be certain to mark “Top” on the side of the template. Otherwise, your cover could be make incorrectly as a mirror image of your spa. Also, write your name and phone number on the template.
5. For in-ground spas without rims please add at least 6-8″ to the opening dimensions (length and width) so that your hot tub cover will be supported properly and extend past the spa opening at least 3-4″ on all sides.
